I am his voice of reason (disregard previous posts of the encroaching signs indicating I have hoarder tendencies). I am the reason he's got an iPhone 3GS instead of the latest model. His MacBook and iMacs (yes, plural) aren't the newest.
However, when the iPad was about to be released, I lost all reasoning. I devoured the articles in MacFormat, MacLife and iCreate. I bought the Digital FX magazines as well. I wanted to create. I could see the iPad suddenly opening up great windows of time for me to sit and create ART again. I NEEDED an iPad.
Of course, after the frenzy died down and I pushed my unopened magazines back behind my iMac, the addiction symptoms subsided. There was only a slight twinge of envy when friends started sending me emails with the "sent from my iPad" signature.
I've accepted the realization that my ART is on hold-- whether with oil, photography or digital-- until the children are weaned. I live with it.
So yesterday, Hubby threw all of the "this is my life" acceptance out the window when he brought home a gift bag. It was dark blue with gold tissue paper.
I thought maybe there was a Blue and Gold Banquet we were supposed to attend and then remembered we don't have any Scouts in our house.
It's a gift, for no reason (he assures me there's no hidden "price tag" and since he does have the flu, I'm taking his word for it). He bought an iPad for me. With a case.
I have owned said Apple product now for 24 hours and it still sits unwrapped on my counter. When I unwrap it, I can no longer return it.
After googling "Why do I need an iPad?" I've come to the conclusion that no one knows why anyone has one.
So tell me. Please. You have until Monday because the clock is ticking on the receipt. WHY do I need an iPad? WHAT difference will it make in my life?
Here's my arguments against:
- I like books. I like the way they smell, feel and I love bagging me a great bargain book for 20p at the carboot.
- I like magazines, however, I could pay less and not have recycling to deal with if I just downloaded them onto an iPad.
- All of the ART software available does NOT mean I will have the time to do anything more than what I'm (not) doing now..
- I have an iPhone. What will the iPad offer me that I don't already have?
HELP ME please.
I'd love to say that the best answer will win a free iPad, but who hasn't been spammed with that one yet?

Well, why not? Enjoy.
ReplyDeleteThe larger screen means better readability. I love my iPhone, but if someone gave me an iPad, I'd be all about that bad boy. As a new Kindle user, I love being able to prop the book on my knees in bed to read. It totally rocks. Yet I'm also reading the books still scattered all over the house. And social networking! From anywhere! On a large screen! Awesome!!!
ReplyDeleteBiggest reason to keep it? Because your husband loves you enough to buy it "just because".
What a sweet hubby!
ReplyDeleteI can't help you, though my kids - who borrow their grandma's iPad to play games when she's in town - would definitely advocate for it! :-)
We got our son one for school. It's very user-friendly and makes navigating the Internet extremely easy. The touch keypad makes it portable in a way even a laptop is not. The ebooks are a good reason, the seemingly endless list of available apps will give you lots of artistic outlets. I could go on... you have it, open it, ENJOY it.
ReplyDeleteAwww. That's so sweet!
ReplyDeleteI have a Nook Color. I always thought I would hate them, I LOVE it. Love it. I don't miss the feeling of paper. I love that when I'm (endlessly) waiting for my children in one way or another, I can read, or do a Soduku, or whatever. (I would have infinite more fun with an Ipad, just sayin'.)
You can email, you can check news, you can read my blog, you can entertain your kids so they don't drive you crazy while you wait places.
I love to put my grocery list on the Nook. Look! Environmentally friendly. I look up recipes on it and take it in the kitchen instead of the laptop.
You will love it. Eventually. Besides, even if you don't, you CAN NOT send the message to your hubby that sending it back would send. You owe it to your future self to reinforce his gift-giving instincts.
:)
I got my iPad because when we're on the road - literally, driving - I can get directions, weather, or whatever, without being near a hotspot. You need that sometimes during road trips.
ReplyDeleteI will say, though, the only thing I haven't been able to do with mine is post a blog. I can respond to yours, but my own blog window doesn't get recognized by the iPad.
The best reason is that your husband wants you to have it. It would be a loving and gracious gesture to accept his gift. But if you REALLY don't think you want it.. pick me! ;)
ReplyDeleteHa, I don't know much about them so I won't be much help--but this conversation thread should be interesting.
ReplyDeleteYour arguments are good ones-- I can see your enthusiasm! I know it seems like I'm an ungrateful wife :-( Why do I have such issues with high dollar items being purchased without mutual consent?
ReplyDeleteLaughing at the reference to the Blue & Gold.
ReplyDeleteI think our husbands may be related in regards to thinking they own Apple stock.
I'm not sure why you need one, but when I sit in ward council and see the three people in there that have them, I feel the need to have one too. Maybe so I can pretend I'm looking up gospel doctrine, while really checking my email.
I fought getting a Kindle for a year. My husband wanted to get me one for Christmas and I told him no. Then when I realized I could get new releases for much cheaper and faster, and could download a book in an instant (I tend to panic when I run out of things to read), I decided it wasn't a bad idea. I have loved it.
Can't wait to hear what you decide.
I have literally been wondering the same thing. I've been considering getting an iPad myself but can't really justify the purchase. What would I use the darn thing for? Hmmmmmm....I'm still thinking.
ReplyDeleteI like some of these reponses though.
Oh, the IPad. We took the plunge after the price went down when the IPad 2 was announced. For my daughter. You know, because she has autism and it's a miracle piece of technology for kids like her. Right now it's just a movie/music/game player for her. Awfully expensive if you ask me. (But we're thinking we will start to use it as a communication device. Then it's actually really cheap. Except I'm not sure the school will work with us with it, so... who knows?)
ReplyDeleteAll that to say? It's beautiful and I love it and I would love to use it instead of my ipod to check my email and stuff. But will I get one for myself? Probably not, since a laptop is probably more practical. But it's so very lovely.
I think you deserve one =) you're into Apple anyway, and it is a much larger iPod touch. And think of the put it can bring while you are on vaycay =) or even when you're at home!
ReplyDeleteYou deserve it!! *sends email with posting address incase you don't want to keep* ;)
I'm with whoever said because your husband gave it to you. That is a really good one.
ReplyDeleteWe got our daughter one for Christmas and she LOVES it but she's in bed right now so I can't ask her why so I guess I'm just useless.
Sorry...
Ha ha! Well, if you don't want it, I would gladly take it.
ReplyDeleteAlthough I'd much rather have a new MacBook because I think blogging and writing on iPad is not exactly easy.
Great articles Nice postings i really appreciate on your hard workings. Well!! keep going on and try more best as you can really impressive post that you have been done here..
ReplyDelete@JiCaLu, I am draining my brain trying to figure out the significance of your name. Thank you :-)
ReplyDelete@CB, silly, you buy a keyboard to use with your new iPad2
Thanks everyone, I'm a proud (if not bewildered) owner of an iPad. The first one. We're not crazily throwing our cash around over here, you know. ;-)
Oh it's me Jill, but google made me get a new username (not sure why) - the first two letters from my first middle and last name!
ReplyDeleteGlad you're enjoying it, it's well deserved. Hope you have it in a glass case when you're not using it ;)
