Afflictions & Snipers

My poor daughter has a terrible condition.
For some reason, her arms, that can wrap around each side to touch her shoulder blades, aren't quite long enough to scratch her own arm "pips".
It's quite sad really, but she's fortunate to have so many in her family willing to drop everything when she needs those "pips" itched.

Surely this is from her Dad's side...

My side of the family is afflicted with the inability to read just one book at a time.  One of the books taking over my bedside table is AMERICAN SNIPER by NAVY SEAL Chris Kyle.

I don't usually read war/guy-type books because I like to live with my head in the sand but I am really glad I was offered a chance to review this one.

This book and I got off to a rough start. I was having a hard time discerning the "voice" that I was reading. But after I set aside the literary snobbery I must have gained from my four years of university level English and just began reading the book for the value of the story telling, I started to enjoy the experiences shared by Kyle.
Chris Kyle is an incredibly focused, committed Navy Seal. Readers should go into this book remembering that and not expecting Twain, Hemingway or Shakespeare.
One reviewer best described his writing style as though the reader is sitting in the room with him while he tells his stories. Once I looked at it that way, it was hard to put it down. I could envision myself gathering around the kitchen table while Chris told his stories about being in Iraq.

AMERICAN SNIPER has also opened my eyes to things our troops deal with both away and home. I found myself looking at my husband differently since in all honesty, I sometimes see his time of deployment a holiday of sorts...
Even so, I know that Kyle has probably had to "water down" some of his stories for various reasons.

Kyle doesn't go into a lot of detail-except when describing weapons. The weapon sections alone would appeal to the testosterone holder in the family, while the broad overview of life as a SEAL manages to keep readers like myself still engaged.
It's a quick and easy read, perfect for anyone with an ounce of patriotism flowing through their veins.

I feel so lucky that I had a chance to read this!

SO,

let's share the love!

I am excited to connect the nice people over at William Morrow with one LUCKY reader to win his or her own free copy of AMERICAN SNIPER by Chris Kyle!!
Read a free excerpt of the book here at Scribd (if you want to see what I'm going on about).

Nothing crazy, nothing elaborate, just leave a comment and tell me what you're reading, or why you think American Sniper would look good in your home.

WAIT! Did I say ONE lucky reader? Make that two. Comment and clear off the bedside table...

I have to go scratch someone's arm pips.

  1. Hey J,
Put me in the running for your Kyle book contest!
I just saw Chris Kyle at the SHOT Show in Las Vegas, last week. I didn't get a chance to meet him due to the crowds.
A few years ago I read Carlos Hathcock's book. "Whitefeather" was a USMC Vietnam era sniper, and with his help, and the help of others, began the official military sniper programs. It would be interesting to see the evolution that has occurred between these two guys.

    Thanks,
    Jeff

  2. Sounds really interesting! With a family full of males that love the military and guns, I'm sure it'd get passed around a lot.

  3. Hmmmmm. Scratching arm "pips" doesn't sound like too much fun but . . . I guess the family that scratches together stays together. Right?

  5. I feel your pain--I am a juggling reader as well.

I think older boy is reading American Sniper as well. I haven't bothered him too much about it since he knows I am next in line for it.

  6. "Wow! I would love to read his book and I'm sure Hubby would, too, as he loves him some military weaponry ever since his days in the Army.

I'm currently reading the fourth book in the Chronicles of Narnia series, as well as Sharon Osbourne's book, and Candace Cameron Bure's book."

    Enjoy scratching those pips.

  8. Oh how I've missed this, one of my favorite blogs.

I read almost exclusively comedy books, but I'd certainly be interested in reading this cool book. As would my wife, I'm sure.

I should visit more often. Someday I'll get back into the blog world.

  10. Ok, I'm in for the book! I'm married to a military man and would love to add this to our shelf! I'm currently reading the Goosegirl series (when I get a free moment). I recently received some fitness training from a Navy Seal, and man- he was freaking tough!

  12. Well, what a cool blog you have! Arm pips...that cracks me up!

I think my hubby would love that book. And maybe I would, too, if I read it through your perspective. Right now I'm reading At Home by Bill Bryson. It's long and so full of info it's almost hard to digest. But I just love his wit and it does shine through each page.

  15. It sounds interesting, and I am always up for a good read. Two of the blogs I read are written by ladies with military men (yours and envoyette's) I think these men and women do a lot for our nations - I am certainly not signing up any time soon :P

  16. I think I forgot to leave out what I was reading and my "why". So I'm reading One Thin Dime by Daniel Falatko (just started), and I think my son, recently home from a year over in Afghanistan, would enjoy it as well!!! Thanks for the opportunity!!!

  17. Last night in the US news they talked about a group of 50+ people who have written about their experiences during WWII, which I consider to be the last *civilized* war.

I can't begin to imagine what recent wars have done to their soldiers emotionally. I know my grandfather never would talk about his war stories. Why? Because he had to commit a sin by killing other human beings, which changes people and it breaks my heart for them. I can barely kill a fly, myself. I'd be worthless during war unless the enemy got up close & personal, threatening to take my life or the life of someone I love. Then, I'm pretty sure I could outdo Rambo, at his best.

Our daughter's boyfriend from high school ended up in Afghanistan, eventually losing his left leg as well as his best friend in the world. They made a movie about it but I've never gotten to see it. It was horrible for obvious reasons but also because he'd had such a great love for the game of soccer.

Anyway, they fitted him with a *bionic leg* of sorts at the base hospital in San Antonio, so now he goes around the country speaking to military amputees and doing his best to inspire them to move on with their lives. He is so remarkable!

So.... I must read this book! If not for me or for you, I'll do it for this amazing young man that I admire so much. Thank you for bringing it to my attention!
