A Book I Can't Tell You About

I love when you put a book down,
and return to it to look up specific passages a few minutes later.
And when having a conversation the next day with friends,
have to bite your tongue
to keep from discussing twists, plots
or the ending.

and referring to characters like
the good friends they became to me while I read.

I just finished a book like that.
My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult.

Here I am, NOT talking about it
because no one talked to me
before I read it
which is probably why the book is haunting me
in everything I do.

And you know what really stinks?
When the Hubby came home from Iraq,
he was under the (false) impression
that I didn't have a large enough book stack
next to our bed,
so he brought more home.

When I finished "My Sister's..."
I felt like I was betraying
the memory
of the book,
the characters,
whatever
and couldn't begin another one.

I'd really like to explain it,
but I'm trying to not tell you about this book I just read.

  1. I'm not sure I can read that one. From what I've heard it is fabulous (apparently the movie-which I haven't seen- does NOT do the book justice), but it sounds horribly painful. Being as emotional as I am (normally and lately as well), I don't know if it would be a good idea. What do you think?

  2. I read this book a few years ago, and I couldn't put it down. I cried, laughed, and was surprised.

It was the best book I read that year.

I gave a book review of it to our library group, and a few months after the review, I saw it on the shelf. I thought I'd check and see if any one had read it. The 'check out paper' was brand new, so I knew at least 40 people had read it. I mentioned it to the librarian, and she told me that was the 3rd copy of the book. The first one was checked out so many time, it fell apart, so they replaced it with 2, and the other one was checked out.

It is still one of my favorite books.

  3. I don't have time to read anymore, I really miss that. I did get through the Twilight series, but that was straight up addiction not to mention it was by flashlight while the kids were sleeping (we're still in 1 room), so it cost a lot, lol.

I would like to see the movie, but I've heard as good as it is, it doesn't do the book justice either.

    Blessings,
    Carolynn

  5. It's already on my list (and I SO appreciate that you aren't sharing more than I have already heard). We can email after I've read it. Oh to be blessed with a teatime bookclub with you . . . *sigh*

  6. my mom recommended the books as well.

i've felt that way after really good books, too, like I don't want to read something else because i want this one to linger longer, or i know the new one can't possibly be as good. Poisonwood Bible was probably the biggest example of that for me.

  7. Ok, I am almost sold on getting it from paperback swap, but this is totally not a book I would normally read. A gal at work said she stayed up all night to finish it.

  8. Loved it, read it ages ago and it has been the rounds of DIL, and daughters. We all love Jodi Picoult, have not read a bad one by her. In fact I think I have four of hers on my shelves at the moment. They have everything you need, not only a blazing good story, nut literary merit too.

  11. I think this is Jodi Picoult's best novel. Couldn't put it down once I started. I have heard that the movie does not do the book justice ~ but I feel that most books are way better than the movie version. Happy Reading!

  12. I've heard of this one too. I'm going to have to check it out. I've also heard the movie's ending is nothing like the book, and makes it a bit disappointing. Of course, I'm usually disappointed in the theatrical version.

  14. My daughter loved the book, and was kind of suprised at the movie. I myself haven't read it, as I just finished reading "Breaking Dawn". And I'd be HAPPY to talk about that one with you! We have a group of friends taking a day of vacation in 100 days (per your countdown) to see the Midnight showing of New Moon!! You should come!!

  15. I haven't read this book yet but am intriqued by just how hard you had to work at NOT talking about it! It is going on my list of books to read!

  17. Read it. Felt the same way - like a kick in the gut. But the movie? Ends exactly like you think the book should have. Without trying to give anything away here...

  19. I haven't read this one, but the request list for it at the library is about a mile long, so it is definitely popular. I'm betting it is a good one too. Thanks for not telling us about it. :D
