Gardening

A potted plant,
a curry, with a wonderful scent
So beautiful and lush in the store,
now sits in my kitchen excited and nervous at the new surroundings.

In the rush of adjustments, the Curry watches the blur of activity around her.
The thrill of months of stories related
and giggles (rising loudly to the ceiling)
fill her ears (do curry plants have ears?).

But someone has forgotten to water the Curry.

Another couple of days goes by and the thrill of the newness becomes more of a desperation...
wondering when they will look at her, see her wilting
lives are busy and their minds never consider that she needs attention too.

By day four,
her branches are drooping
leaves are falling
and she wonders, "Am I invisible?" "Don't they even see that I'm here?"

And the one she trusted the most
the one she had looked up at with wonder
and anticipation
continues on in the sunshine
unaware that she's reaching the point of no return.

It happens sometimes
neglect of houseplants

Which ones can be saved?

Which ones go into the bin?

Which ones shout, "Hey! Look at me! I lost weight too... remember that muffin top that was there before you left? I worked hard to get rid of that, and the fact that I have put on make up three days in a row? And shaved my legs! Have you even seen me? And, HELLO, I AM still here!"

Do curry plants have muffin tops?

  1. I am also a killer of houseplants but now, after reading this, I feel somehow inordinately more guilty about it! That poor plant!

I can grow things GREAT outside but houseplants? Not so much. My bin of succulents is hanging on just barely and they only have to be watered once a month. Sigh.

  2. Oh I see what you're about. Been there, done that. All that "I'm so glad to see you - look how I've primped and prettied up JUST FOR YOU and you're acting like I'm a part of the furniture" routine. The worst time was when Randey returned from the middle east in December 2001 and was like "oh hey - good to see you" when I was ready to jump out of my own skin to see HIM again. The fact that he was on pain medication for a minor back injury didn't matter to me one bit. He should have at least FAKED more excitement and joy and wonder, as far as I'm concerned. And he's NEVER lived it down - not to this day. lol

But I'm sure that with a little tending, all things will flourish yet once more. (And by "tending", I mean you may have to utilize a baseball bat instead of a watering can.)

Good luck with that curry. I've heard it can be a real hardy spice when it has to be. :)

  4. I don't even try anymore. It's too heartbreaking...

The plants I mean. I still shave and work on the muffin top. :)

  7. Well then. I'll never look at my neglected plants the same way again. Might as well give them puppy dog stares. Geez, J. Now I'm carrying the guilt of ALL THOSE PLANTS I KILLED!!!

  8. This summer, I've killed 4 topsy turvy plants, three planters of flowers, and am finishing off my little veggie garden. Now that you've given voice to your Curry plant, I feel absolutely miserable. It would all be okay if only I hadn't finished off the chocolate ice cream for breakfast! This is going to take some time.

  9. We have one plant we thought we killed...put the thing in its VERY LARGE pot outside ~ LO and BEHOLD, that sucker renewed its lease on life...now if only we can keep Monkey from climbing it.

(p.s. Love your Red, White and Blue theme...Bless them all!)

  10. Hmmmm, is this post really about the curry plant?????
Do I need to track down the mister's blog and leave him a comment or two? LOL
Yeah, just give it a little water and a little time and see if it bounces back. That would be my suggestion. I've done that with some success once or twice before. Other times, there's just been no coming back for the poor thing.

Now, if the mister is being neglectful, I think the best solution might be just ripping all your clothes off and jumping on him. That's pretty hard to misunderstand. 8P

  11. Yup, I don't try either!! Hope you are enjoying your hubby being home. Obviously it's kept you too busy to water the plant!!

That can't be all bad...can it??

  13. It's funny what a family notices but just doesn't really act on, despite really wanting to. I'm just saying.

  14. I've given up on indoor plants too. They do so much better outdoors - even with the rabbits nibbling them away a little at a time!

  15. Good thing my kids didn't need a daily drink from a watering can...they'd never have made it!

  16. Houseplants and I have never gotten along with each other. They are such demanding little creatures. "Give me water." "Not too much!!!!" "I need more light." "Don't put me too close to the heater!!" "Talk to me." "I NEED TO BE PRUNED."

Bossy little buggers. Any plants that enter our house are immediately turned over to the care of my husband because they will surely die a slow and painful death in my hands.

Enjoyed your poem, but it also made me feel very guilty. :)

Hope you are having a great weekend!

  17. Plant talk? I think not.

    (I wonder . . . did I get the between-the-lines version denied others?)

I know of what you speak. Prayers for you, dear friend.

As the curry plant wilts, so doth the returning knight clunk around in armor he forgets to shed. The coat of mail shall be cast off in due time and the curry plant will revive at the mere glance in her direction. Miracles of love happen every day. May today be that day for you.

    Much Love,
    Debbie

  18. Just wanted to say love you much, pray for you often. Tell the curry to keep her chin up. :)
