I'm ticked off.
Angry.
I'm offended.
I resent what the news programs are shoving down our throats today.
For a couple of weeks, I have been diligently flipping on the two news channels that give me a little bit of U.S. information, to see who John McCain would be choosing (just in case he caved and told us early). It mattered to me. I'm afraid it REALLY mattered to me.
Knowing that today was the big day, I was up before the roosters. I don't know why, U.S. roosters had just gone to bed-- I knew I wasn't going to hear anything.
But I did. I heard lots of speculation. And it went on through the day.
Then I heard this (I may not quote it exactly because I began seething afterwards and may have shorted out some of my wiring):
(one newswoman to news anchor-dude) "There were women who, when I told them 'Romney is NOT the choice, responded, 'Ohhh..." (disappointed), but when I told them it may be a woman, they lit right up".
What the..?
Is this what America believes?
That we, the feeble-minded weak sexed citizens run out and vote for who we think looks most like us?!
I had no intention of voting for Hilary even though she is a woman. I couldn't fathom voting for Obama just because he's young. I wouldn't vote for McCain because he's white. I wasn't racing to the polls to cast my ballot for Romney because he was Mormon.
I was choosing my candidate based on what he's (he/she/it) accomplished as a servant of The People, his track record for doing what he says he's going to do and his stand on things I believe strongly in.
I know nothing about Governor Sarah Palin, but you can bet I will learn everything I can before I lick my absentee ballot envelope.
Believe it or not, I do have a brain, FOX & CNN NEWS, and a temper when you infer that all women are incompetently shouting for joy because McCain picked someone of our gender.
ok. I feel better now.

My husband was listening to a radio talk show and there were actually women calling up and crying because they were so happy that McCain chose a woman. They were saying, "Now I'll vote for McCain for sure!"
ReplyDeleteMade me so damn mad. If the only reason you are voting for someone is because of their gender or race then you are completely OUT OF YOUR MIND!!! While it is very exciting that we are living in times where an African American man is running for president and a VP canidate is a woman I would never vote on that alone. If their policies do not agree with mine I'm not voting for them. Period. Be informed, people!!!
Great post, and I agree completely!!!!
Excellent to hear you say that. Between the media and political analysts you'd think we don't have free will.
ReplyDeletePoxy journalism by shortcuts makes me so cross.
I'm with you there. I remember in the primaries I *wanted* to like Hillary because, you know, but I just couldn't do it in the end because she just makes my skin crawl. And yeah, it's insulting to think that those of us with ovaries all think the same.
ReplyDeleteI don't watch the news. I can't take it. It's so glamorized that it just disgusts me. They put their spin on everything, and people fall for it. Obviously not all people. OBVIOUSLY NOT YOU! I'm with you. I would never vote for any of those people for any of those reasons, and forgive me for this, but people who would don't deserve to vote.
ReplyDeleteI heard the news in passing at lunch today. After Romney dropped out of the race I lost interest. I know who I'm NOT voting for, and unless the VP candidate shows up something horrid in their history, I also know who I AM voting for. And you are absolutely correct about the inferences and idiocy.
ReplyDeleteamen to that! i am so sick of people thinking we should vote for someone because of their race or gender. how about where they stand on the issues that matter?
ReplyDeletewell put!
Oh Canada, how I love thee.
ReplyDeleteWell said...being a Canadian, I am not caught in the middle of the US politics, but being a media analyst for the Canadian Federal government I get to review, compare and analyze this announcement through multiple sources and I am simply anoyed at many females out there...vote on track record, abilty and policy...not on gender...politics is such a game!
ReplyDeleteI think the media does believe just that, that the voting populace is ignorant. And I'm sorry to say that I think that there are too many ignorant people who are part of the voting populace. My mouth was one big gape the other night watching the Democratic coverage. I'm not sure if I can handle watching the Republican coverage, but I'm going to try to do my best. It's always best to know both sides. But the fickleness of the vote - THAT enrages me!
ReplyDeletePalin is one of my personal heroes and I'm voting more for her than McCain. And it's only because she stands for what's right and good, not because she's a woman.
ReplyDeleteI should have read this post before the other. I actually laughed when I heard who he picked. I was like nothing like trying to pander to those disenfranchised Hillary voters. Especially when he has only met her once. I had never heard of her, it will be interesting to see what she brings. I'm all for "breakng the glass ceiling" but it doesn't mean I will vote for you.
ReplyDeleteoh, I'm so glad you got my rant! Sometimes when I'm passionate about something, I become incoherent. Apparently bloggers do NOT fall in that uneducated woman voter category -- I'm so glad!
ReplyDeleteThis is why I love blogging - because we can make our voices heard in ways that are impossible otherwise. Thank you. This was excellent.
ReplyDeleteI don't envy you. I would not know who to vote for.
