Have You Ever?

I had a friend that was sent off to L.A. once for an employee training thing. The group took personality tests to discover what kind of person they were and how best to deal with the personalities of the others they worked with.

I don't need a weekend seminar to know I am a Pleaser.
I want to be liked and I will work very hard for your acceptance. It's sickening really.

For instance, music is one of my greatest passions. I feel lost without some sort of something playing throughout my house.

Once for my birthday, June 1998, the Hubby kidnapped me from Young Women's Camp and took me to Kansas City to see Michael Crawford sing. I was so happy to hear his melodic voice stroke the the beautiful words of Sir Andrew I thought I might wet my pants-- at least I think it was the music that had that effect, I was also 8 months pregnant.

When we moved to England and were forced to buy all new appliances and electrical stuff, a stereo system was last on the priority list. It was a year before I finally broke down and purchased a little portable cd player for my kitchen. When I popped in one of my cds, it was like chocolate melting on the tongue-- bliss. I realized then that maybe to lose my hearing would be the worse thing that could ever happen to me.

  • Have you ever considered which of the five (you maybe have six ?) senses
you would prefer to loose if you had to give up one?

Anyway, (I digress. a lot.) you can imagine how I felt one day when I went to one of my favorite blogs to discover that she HATED music on blogs. Hated it. At first, I thought, "Well, turn it off" but then she listed several (very) valid reasons why it keeps her from going back. And she received LOTS of comments agreeing with her. My blog was not pleasing to her.

That's how my poll began. I wanted to know how YOU felt.

Several of you have commented in the past how much you like the playlist. A few of you do like I do with Kathryn's blog and just open it up to let the music play (I can't tell you how giddy comments like that make me feel).

  • I work hard to coordinate songs with my posts, have you ever picked up on that?

Now that the poll is closed, I'm in a quandary. Although only 2 people felt I should "get rid of it now", 3 said they "tolerate it". That's five people I'm not pleasing.

I considered changing it so that you could turn it on when you stopped by, but flip, I work so hard coordinating my stuff. And really, have you ever gone to someone's blog (and actually like music to read by) and turned their playlist on?

Have you ever:

  • Changed something about your blog to accommodate your readers? (I got rid of my word verification for a sweet, dyslexic blogger).
  • Reinvented your writing style/blog since you began blogging?
  • Inadvertently left a passion behind, or neglected it for a time?
  • Picked up on the clues scattered throughout this post?
Feel free to answer any of these in a comment here or a post on your blog-- just let me know so that I can come by to read it (I have two kids home with a flu bug, so my reading has been limited).

  1. You are just so damn cute! I just love you!

I have considered turning off my music a million and one times. But I have gotten so many comments about people leaving my site up while they roam around the internet because they like the music, so I haven't yet. It does get exhausting trying to pick a song for a post.
Also, if someone doesn't like the music they can turn their speaker off. Or pause my music. Or not visit me. Whatever.
I am a people pleaser too. It does bother me a bit. But it comes down to this:
-It's my blog. It is supposed to represent me. I like music.
    -You can't please everyone.
-Sometimes music just enhances a post. IMO
-If people don't like music on blogs then they can turn off their speakers when they read them.

I like your music. It is always calm and soothing. Keep it on!

Unless you don't want to. ;)

ps- if you are really serious about wanting my WW pic blown up you can save it to your computer and order it online if you want. Otherwise, give me your address and I'll send you a blow up of it if you like.

  2. I'm very new to your blog but I did vote in your survey - I lurked a bit reading archives and such.
Personally for me, I have turned off the playlist - not because I don't like the music but because I usually do my blogwalking early in the morning or late at night and I'm afraid of the music disturbing the sleeping people in the other rooms. I voted that you should keep your music - hey it's YOUR blog and if the music bothers someone they can just turn it off.

  4. If you happen to read this within the next 5 days, Happy Birthday lil' sis. I'll take you to Macy's for cup of coffee if/when you get back on the same side of the Earth I'm on. Love, Gene

  5. In all honesty, I always turn off the music becuase I usually have other media going like my stereo or other people or myself have the TV on so it disturbs them. It's not that I don't like the music it's just that something else is going on in my house!

  7. Funny thing is for the longest time I didn't even know you had music on your blog. I am an energy saver and AS SOON as I'm not using my speakers I turn them off. When reading blogs I turn them off. So, it was quite by accident that I heard music playing after my not-so-energy-efficient daughter had left the speakers on.

THIS music you have on today is like chocolate...better even and that says a lot. I saw this production in Ottawa with a friend who was a ballerina and her friend was in the show. We started backstage, watched from a production booth and then finished backstage. It was PURE magic. LOVE IT to this day!

Usually, though, I don't listen...sorry...your voice is loud enough...

  8. I am a relatively new reader, also. I did vote for "turn it off" because I don't like to have noise imposed on me when I'm not expecting it. But I could turn off my speakers, so it's not a big deal. Also, today I hear one of my favorite songs so, of course, it bugs me less! Still, were I to have my own blog, I don't think I would have music on it. Bet that helps you a lot, doesn't it?

  9. OH! And I can't WAIT until you can reveal to me what my very simple mind can not grasp...where are you going? Maybe my lack of religious education is holding me back...

  10. first of all... no, I have not figured out the clues yet. You DO know I have mommy brain right?

second, I love your music and want you to keep it. So there.

third, I think I would give up smell if I had to give up a sense. I don't even LIKE half the smells around me anyway. But I'd rather not give up any :)

  11. I voted too and I love your music. I worked really hard on my music for the blog as well, but it started making ME crazy, so I took it off.

Like you, music has always been at the very core of my being. I am the only person I know that is like this. I'm surrounded by people who don't give a rat's ass about music. Period. How could this have happened? How can people not be *into* music?

Luckily, you like most of the same stuff I do, so you're like my new favorite person. No, this doesn't make us The Banger Sisters, lol.

So far with my blog, I am still so new that I'm trying to just please me at this point. Frankly, I wouldn't be here & doing this if I wrote to please others. I'd be off writing The Novel of my life. I just thought that if I could help someone else through hard times (or help someone to see that life is what you make of it) with my stories, then I'm happy.

  13. Wait wait wait. Do I know the answer because of your email? That just means I can't guess. I'm going to pout now.

And why do the writings of LDS override what the Son of God says? Maybe you're right and I shouldn't ask that question.

As to playlists, I never hear yours when I come to your blog. My speakers are on. Sports Mama's is one of the few which comes on, and Hallie's. I like SM's, since it's all music I grew into in high school. But if I had to lose one sense, it would probably be hearing. *wince* Sorry. I'm a word person and a little bit of an artist. Couldn't stand to lose sight and touch.

  14. I love your CHOICE of music and I can't say that about most other bloggers who have music....if they are in their twenties, I REALLY don't like it! My husband asks me to turn on your blog so he can listen while he sits on his laptop in our home office. Keep it!!

  15. Ooooh, I like how the comment window now pops up so that the music continues to play. Speaking of music, that's why I am commenting. I love your musical choices and would hate to see the playlist go away. Keep the tunes coming.

  16. Have I ever changed something to accommodate a reader? Yes, I removed a poll that a reader said was making her computer freeze up when she visited my site.

Reinvented your writing style? Sometimes I really want to cuss and I don't so I don't offend people. But I stopped that - now I let the cuss words fly if I'm feeling them.

I'm always feeling guilty over things I neglect when I blog. Then I switch and am really productive at home, family, friends, etc. and don't blog for weeks. I need to find a balance. I'm an all or nothing kinda gal.

    I haven't the slightest clue.

Keep the music - it's your blog. I love music.
