yes, you guessed it-- The Telectroscope!!
Oh, you didn't guess it? nevermind.
I was just attracted to the Zoltar-looking thing and wanted to feed it pound coins so that I could take pictures of it, but it actually gave us a ticket to look through the telectroscope. How cool (read: silly) is that?!
As we were approaching it,
THIS is what he was trying to tell me:
"LONDON, England (CNN) (click to see the whole article)-- As the first splinters of sunlight spread their warmth on the south bank of the River Thames on Thursday, it became clear that after more than a century, the vision of Victorian engineer Alexander Stanhope St. George had finally been realized.

The Telectroscope lets Londoners and New Yorkers see each other in real time.
Since I had tuned out of most of what he said, I approached it a little confused. I actually thought he said it was a video RECORDING, not a live video feed, so I was getting a big kick out of the people waving and making silly faces into the wrong end of a giant telescope.
I finally caught on when the man in NYC was mimicking what we were doing on our side.
You know what really gets me?
We paid £1 each to stand in front of a big Telescope lens and make fools of ourselves,
but in America, they were just walking right up to it.
That's just wrong.
Spoiled Americans.
Oh wait, I am one.
Somebody left this stuff just laying around, so we straightened London up a bit before we left.
Remember the news story about the person who bought the Starbucks coffee for the car behind them and how it went on throughout the day?
We thought it'd be fun to start an ice cream "Pay it Forward", buying the a cone with some syrup and flake for the next customer. This guy didn't know what to think. He said something like, "I am meeting the most interesting people here today!" and was a
We told him to just tell the person that some Americans had already paid for the ice cream-- he said, "They'll want to know your name, do you have a blog?"
do I have a blog? Hah! I whipped out my camera and said, "Yes! Can I take your photo for it?!"
Hah! It is a sickness, this camerahand....

I loved this post! (All of your posts are great, I'm just really excited about that cool "telescope" and you buying ice cream for strangers). I think I will love London too, and wish I could come play with you. Unfortunately, they are taking their time getting Baby Gray's passport to us, so I am bound to Germany with my newborn for the time being.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I totally relate to your "camerahand"! I think I suffer from a similar illness. Can you believe I haven't printed pictures in a year? It took me over 48 hours to upload my "print" file to kodakgallery.com.
Too cool. I have to say, though, that when you said Zoltar, the first thing that popped into my head was the gypsy thing in Big that gave Tom Hanks his dream of being bigger. I can be such a dork.
ReplyDeleteThere are some things that just don't stick in my brain very well. Now if it were in a book (that I've read) I would have known all about it. LOL
Good for you...way to pay it forward! Oh, and hi btw...you commented on my design blog, and I am loving your London trip:)
ReplyDeletedo you have a blog? that's like asking if you have a camera!!
ReplyDeleteam i first? the first comment today? i think that is a first for me.
so...what's going on? how's the weather? um...hmmm..
ok, bye
xoxo
what a fun day!
ReplyDeleteand is there REALLY a telescope that goes all the way under the ocean or is that a joke... I am very gullible and I can't tell if this is one of those times I'm being taken in by the world on some cosmic joke.
because really, WHY would someone build that?
And what ARE those things you are cleaning up all over London? Alien eggs? kryptonite? British Giant poop? a joke that British people are playing on tourists (ha ha ha those ridiculous Americans will believe anything is art ha ha).
do you have a blog.
what a silly question!
Man! Were you on when they were filming it for tv? I would've said, "Puppy! I know her!!" and then, he would've rolled his eyes and gone back to Lego Indiana Jones, but still!!! Lucky you.
ReplyDeleteWow, I wish they were filming at the time, because then I could've photographed the guy filming me!
ReplyDeleteAnd it's a live feed-- you know, camera to camera between Brooklyn and London (so no, it's not under the water, but the idea was based on a dream of connecting underwater). Why leave something for Americans to look silly with? Because they will. Undoubtedly, they will.
You are having way too much fun!! I want to travel with you!
ReplyDeleteI think I'm having cake for dinner tonight. :)
I've been to New York but I didn't see the telescope. That is pretty cool. I love those giant black pool balls you guys are picking up. Too cool.
ReplyDeleteAnd I love love love that you have camera hand deformity.
it's a video feed or it's a telescope? i'm so confused. and people are starving, but it's just GREAT that you can see from london to NYc. Life is so weird (as I type on my laptop, and the large screen tv sits silently in the corner and I make judgement on other people's use of money and time...)
ReplyDeletei am so glad no one has ever asked if I have a blog. i would have to lie and I'm generally against lying.
oh wow, how wild. "do you have a blog?" reminds me of when people first started asking, "do you have a fax machine?"
ReplyDeletethis is the first time i have heard someone ask i someone has a blog.
and thanks for the awesome awesome kind sweetheart comment on my bloggy tonight. you made me grin, kathleen
