"Often, when I am reading a good book, I stop and thank my teacher. That is, I used to, until she got an unlisted number. " ~Author Unknown
I used to teach Gospel Doctrine (Sunday School). I taught it in Missouri, the Azores and New Mexico. I love teaching.
I would prepare by:
Reading the scriptures. Reading the lesson. Pondering the lesson. Re-reading the scriptures that applied to the lesson. I'd print out selected readings that I would have individual class members read, and prepare questions to ask. And pray. a lot. My class is more of a directed discussion than a teacher/student scenario.
When we moved here, we sat in our new Sunday School class and watched the teacher weave in and out of the scriptures, pulling in threads of world history and adding relevant linguistic touches. We'd leave her classroom blanketed in the understanding of something previously elusive to us.
She is a scholar. Her IQ must be off the charts.
When this teacher presents the New Testament, she comes laden with engaging details to set the stage for whatever scriptural account we're studying. She brings pictures, drawings, charts-- whatever it takes to break into our child-like minds.
Ours isn't a quiet church, but you won't see us standing and applauding or rolling on the floor-- that's usually reserved for the 4 and under crowd. However, a few of her lessons have made me want to jump up and shout, "Amen! "and "Encore!" She's brilliant.
And best of all,
she's humble.
So imagine my reaction when I was approached by the Sunday School Pres. and asked to substitute for her class for two weeks. And my day was going so well....

You'll do FINE. Your discussion method will be just what the class needs after being led for awhile. A little autonomy is a good thing.
ReplyDeleteYou'll bring your own energy, your own magic. Didn't you know you had a vast supply? Mabye you'll even bring your two little friends. Maybe they had something to share...
ReplyDeleteWhat an interesting and very complex person you are. I'm trying to figure you out like some riddle that I'm hearing all about but the punch line is just out there beyond the noise. I wonder if we're all like that? (I'm really not very deep, just very curious.)
Well, that is quite an honor, don't you think? I think so. I never knew that Sunday school teacher prepared so much. I'm not sure they do that at our church. ;) I think they just read the passages and have the kids draw pictures or something. hehe
ReplyDeleteI know you'll do a great job. Don't stress. :)
It's an honor and you'll do great!
ReplyDeleteI'm sure there are people who think the same thing of you. Obviously.
ReplyDeleteObviously you've got some real fans of your own - good luck, you'll be great!
ReplyDeleteI agree. She must think well of you or she wouldn't have asked you to do it.
ReplyDeleteBesides, we all like you and think you are awesome, so why wouldn't they?
I do know what you mean about an engaging scriptural teacher that just BRING IT HOME and make WOW... never thought of it like that before!!
ReplyDeleteI'm sure you'll do fine. I have faith in you.
You will do great - just do it YOUR way...I have faith in you and you should too!
ReplyDeleteIt'll be a great couple of weeks in Gospel Doctrine class. I look forward to the lessons because you are a wonderful teacher.
ReplyDeleteStop. You guys are giving me a big head-- remember, I kind of need that "humble" thing...
ReplyDeleteThank you!
Wow. What an honor! I can't wait to hear about your experiences sub-ing.
ReplyDeleteyou'll be just what they need.
ReplyDeletesince i was released from primary 3 weeks ago, i have been enjoying being in sunday school and RS again. i love how our SS teacher does this. he keeps cracking me up. he uses humor to teach his lessons. he is just what i want to hear right now.
you will do great. it's not that you serve, it's how you serve. blessings, kathleen
ps. maybe you could bring the cows into the classroom to help you (pics) and the kids might get a real kick out of you including them. you could dress them up and have them role play parts of the lesson. maybe? just a thought. oooo, you could make this so fun for them to learn the story. take pics if you do. hope you enjoy this opportunity.
You'll do great! Your teacher sounds like the kind of person I wish I'd met in a Sunday school class. So many times you have someone teaching who has no visible passion for the subject, you know what I mean? Most Sunday school teachers seem to be more about telling what they've been told to tell, rather than explaining and engaging the class about the subject. What's the name of your church? I'm buying my ticket and heading over now. lol
