A perfect example of how we become de-sensitized.
On our lazy cruise through the broads, we came around a bend in the river Yar to discover a small community of homes on the river's edge. In this particular area, they were more like shanties really. There were buildings nearing collapse, old things strewn about, and general neglect.
When I saw this boat, I was instantly transported to a Disney World river cruise-- you know the sort, alligators lurking, hippos spraying the boat with water, pirates pillaging villages and shipwrecks.
I took two pictures before realizing what a sick individual I am.
This is someone's boat. A real someone owns this real boat that is now mostly submerged and I'm gleefully taking photos as if to plaster them throughout my Disney Trip photo album.
Not one of my prouder moments.

Oh boy. I hear you on this one. Loud and clear.
ReplyDeleteNot your fault the boat's submerged. But I hear ya.
ReplyDeleteIt could be worse, there could still be people in it. Why wouldn't they have taken it out yet?
ReplyDeletePhotos can capture sadness as well as happiness. They are both parts of the emotion spectrum. Having sadness in our lives helps us appreciate the happiness all the more. It's just the flip side of the coin. Don't be so hard on yourself. Taking the photo doesn't make you the cause of it. You are just documenting what you see.
ReplyDeleteIn your defense, it was a shocking scene and caught you off guard. No big deal my friend.
ReplyDeletePerhaps it was there on purpose? At least you didn't go to New Orleans after the hurricane and gleefully take pictures there. Now that would make you a bad person.
ReplyDeleteThat is a sad sight, and I'm glad you shared it. So there.
ReplyDeleteYou're hard on yourself. It's a sad scene, but photographers capture humanity on 'film' for the world to see, good and bad.
ReplyDeleteIt's an intriguing shot.
Nice to meet you, I'm pinky.
Love the music!!
Yeah, you're right and I totally get where you're going. Having said that, I always shoot first and think later.
ReplyDeleteI suck too. ;)
Hi..from photostory friday..The picture is awesome on many levels..The strongest is feeling so bad for the individual who lost the sinking ship..I have a boat and would be so sad to see this, and I would not be offended in the slightest if someone shot a photo!
ReplyDeleteyoun know, sometimes those photos can be used to remind you of things... like what you can do to help
ReplyDeletewe have so many similar pictures from after katrina, but I took them to document the destruction
I understand, but I agree with Daisy. Life simply ISN'T rosy all the time and to only document the good would be to paint an unrealistic picture of life.
ReplyDeletereal life staring at ya!
ReplyDeleteI think bottle necking is in our DNA!
ReplyDeleteI'm guessing the people are finished with the boat. You should make up a funny story about how it got there.
ReplyDeleteI catch myself doing similar things...I think its that whole you don't know sweetness until you taste the bitter idea coming into play. We take pictures and read stories and watch movies like that and then go home and look around and realize how lucky we are. Or at least I do. When I'm being smart that is. :)
ReplyDeleteWhat does it say about me that I totally thought JUNGLE CRUISE when I saw the picture before reading the words?
ReplyDeleteThe thing is..if you just passed by and thought about Disney then you might not have ever had a change of thought. Your good fortune is that you did take a permanent picture of this sadness and looked again to really see. That is what I love about photos, we can see...see again...then really see!
ReplyDeleteYou're just documenting life. I wouldn't say it's necessarily a sad picture -- granted it's not my boat. But, maybe there's a whole heroic story behind the situation.
ReplyDeleteMy considered opinion is that you are not a bad person, at all.
After all, you're practically from my backyard...well, originally.
Don't feel bad! Your intentions were good!
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't say you're sick... it was an interesting shot that made you think. And that's not a bad thing. Don't beat yourself up about it.
ReplyDeleteYou have no reason to feel guilty about the photo. Photography captures all types of situations, good and bad. Great Photostory Friday
ReplyDeleteSome great comments here. I think they really sum it up very well, and I have nothing original to add, except that I agree, you're not a horrible person. You snapped a picture of something that caught your attention.
