She's Crafty

As I was sitting outside, freezing to death trying to get a proper photo of my loaner car --in the dark (for an upcoming post), I began shivering.

Shivering really makes it difficult to hold the camera still enough for night shots and I was not going to walk back into the house to get a tripod for a silly post photo.
So I held my breath (good when you're trying to be still) and looked over to see this.
Obviously this photo wasn't taken tonight and you're probably wondering why I bothered to take it at all.

This is me, stepping way beyond my comfort zone.

I signed up for a Spouses Club activity this week to make wreaths even though I am the most craftily-challenged person ever. This project accomplished several things:
  • I agreed to go somewhere without any crutches--no friends.
  • I agreed to go somewhere. period.
  • I also realized that I don't always finish projects I start. Like my first attempt at cross stitch in 1997 that has gone to every location with me for the last 11 years. I managed a shadow and two buttons of a snowman and then got bored with it. There's two unfinished afghans buried in a landfill somewhere in the U.S., do I even need to mention my Stampin'Up collection that NEVER gets used?
So there I was " Wreath night" on the military base where I know NO ONE.

It was a great group, they really helped me feel welcome and hooked me up with a lady that I liked instantly. As we teased our moss and pricked our fingers on nasty little thorns (found a snail and a stink bug in the greens as well) that stinking allergy thing hit again. I had to step away from the table to sneeze and wheeze more than I was actually building my wreath.

As I stood there with a moss-covered wire covered on only one side with a glowing red nose and leaky eyes (I image my face was beginning to resemble a Dali painting), I mentioned that I was happy with it just like it was but my table wouldn't let me give up.
I even tried to leave without a bow, but someone quickly put one on for me and the instructor wouldn't let me exit the building until she put a hanger on the back (despite my protests that I could just wrap a string around it--I think she actually cringed).

I made that sad little wall hanging and lived to photograph it.

Now knowing this, maybe you'll get my excitement over winning these fabulous hand-made cards over at Potted Frog. Don't tell her, but I was actually thrilled to death when I thought I had won a choice of one of the cards, but the prize was all of them!

I'd love to send you a nice little note, but for now I'm sleeping with them on my pillow. They'll probably sit on my mantle after that. Thank you my Albuquerque friend!!

you are so cute! Really, and your wreath looks very pretty, I like natural. Try again to go to another of their get togethers, if your not having a sneezing fit it'll be fun.

Also way to go on two legs and no crutches (one of the hardest things for me as well). I think I can..I think I can..plays over and over in my head when I have/need to do that.

I am with you - my whole life can be chronicled in ascending order with projects started and not finished. Blech.

That wreath looks lovely. Some years ago I made an artificial one which comes out every year. It saves a lot of bother.

There is an award for you on my blog.

I LOVE that wreath! Just beautiful. But people who must follow every single rule - like it needs a bow and hanger - are boring. Do it your way! Is my motto.

That is a beautiful wreath. You are talented!

you are brave - I would never be able to do that!! Love the cards - I won a batch once and never rec'd them, but what do you do - let the person know you didn't receive their giveaway - a freebie?? Rude of me huh??

Your wreath is very pretty. I know what you mean about stepping away from your comfort zone. I almost always dread doing that, but in the end I am usually glad that I did.

So sorry about the allergy attacks. Hope that goes away soon!

Congratulations on winning the note cards! Hurray! :D

I think you did a great job on the wreath! It looks much better than the wreaths I have struggled to make in the past! Be proud!

You are so nice! Thank you for being so excited about the cards.

But about YOU... the wreath is fabulous! I've never made a wreath out of "real" greenery. I am SO impressed. (I would have run screaming from the place if I found, or worse yet, TOUCHED, the snail.) I love it! It should make you smile every time you see it.

I'm even more excited that you did it without a crutch. I would have really not been too excited about that myself, so it's even better you got hooked up with nice people. (Whose conversation didn't make you want to slit your throat--you know what I'm talking about, I know you do.)

But about the crafty things... you need to start small. Cross-stitch is not small. Cross-stitch takes FOREVER! The only time I've ever done any of that worth mentioning was when I was in Iceland and spent 18 hours one or two days a week doing laundry in a basement by myself. Afghans? Start with a scarf! POSSIBLY being crafty really isn't your thing (my mother tried to tolerate craftiness for my sake but never managed to enjoy it), but it may be that you just need the right one.

Oh, and the allergies. Yuk!

I love your wreath. I'm impressed. I almost bought scented pine cones yesterday. I actually carried them around in my cart trying to convince myself that I was crafty enough to make a wreath with them. Then I put them back because, deep down, I knew the truth.

I've tried to follow your blog, but I can't. Blogger won't let me. I don't want to talk about it.

what an accomplishment (after hearing how craftily-challenged a person you are)!

you must be staring at it and doubting, "did I make that? I did, didn't I? Wow!" *laugh*

its beautiful!

Friends never let friends walk away with a bow-less wreath nor allow a careless string to present the beauty! [She gasps at the mere thought of it!] you've found some nice ladies. Gather with them again . . . and take plenty of tissues. ; )

Holy crap! That was fast. And ya, I thought it was just one of them too. Those are gorgeous! And so is your wreath, so there.

I'm a big fan of organic decoration. Not everyone has the guts to do it.
But you my friend, have guts.
I'm proud of you for sticking it out.
