Yes Virginia, There are More Pictures of the Midlands

PhotoStory Friday
Hosted by Cecily and MamaGeek

Our holiday in the midlands was planned by some overly-enthusiastic tourist
who somehow thought we could cram in everything there was to see in the area in approximately four days.

Our first full day was spent in such a joy-filled frenzy, we actually looked forward to spending our second day in one place.
I booked the Think Tank at Millenium Point in Birmingham. I had had to choose between the Sea Life Centre and this, so I researched everything. I knew the hands-on science stop would be a big hit with my nerdy family and was excited to see the kids interact with the future, present and past technology.

After seeing the Rushton Triangular Lodge, Warwick Castle, and Shakespeare's Stratford Upon Avon, this was entirely for the children's enjoyment.

Within in the first hour we were all ready to leave.

What a disappointment! It was less hands-on (although they did have things the kids could participate in, several of them weren't working properly-- poor planning for half-term break).
We stayed long enough to view the 3-D Imax film we had pre-purchased tickets to see (when did Imax stop being about entertainment and start being all tree-hugging?) and then decided to make a break for Stratford Upon Avon again. The day before we had rushed through it and were unable to see Anne Hathaway's cottage, so we decided to make the 45 minute drive again.

Birmingham traffic... yuck, but we managed to get out with only a few delays. Then just as we started seeing signs for Anne Hathaway's cottage, we discovered our exit was blocked. One man in a highway police vehicle was parked next to traffic cones blocking the exit.

Remember, exits here are roundabouts. As you go whizzing around in a circle, it's always abruptly surprising to find you're not getting off where you thought and nerve-racking to make a split decision which exit you're now going to veer towards.

Undaunted, we quickly re-programmed the Sat Nav and headed off on a country road. It popped us back out on the highway we had originally attempted and we joked about British police throwing random road blocks up for giggles.
As we approached our next round about and tail lights twinkled in all hues of red, we realized why this highway was closed. A lorrie (truck) had spilled his very heavy load in the roundabout,
exactly on the exit we needed that proudly displayed the sign "Anne Hathaway's Cottage 1 3/4 miles".

We again re-set the Sat Nav as the entire population of England got off at the same exit.

We crept away from the roundabout... for approximately 2 hours.

People in oncoming traffic began chatting with our queue. I told one lady what was ahead of her and she told us why we were stopped. No road rage, just people being courteous in an otherwise un-fun situation.

I did get a picture of the cottage. Just before the sun went down.

This is it. This is as close as we got to Shakespeare's Wife's home. It's beautiful, don't you think?

  1. Lorries, ugh. Hate 'em. We had a lorry incident about 2 miles from us this morning on the A14; shut down a chunk for most of the morning causing chaos, apparently.

  2. You are a crazy kid. What were you thinking doing all that driving about? My favourite time in Stratford upon Avon was spent messing about in rowing boats on the river near the theatre and a lush pub called the Muddy Duck. Or maybe it was the Dirty Duck. Whatever.

    I didn't go to Anne's cottage either...

  3. well at least it caused some good writing for your blog...even if spedning an extra two hours in the car was NOT on your to-do list for your vacation that day.
    yes, very pretty house. :)

  4. That is such a big bummer....but MAN you have a great way with words if you can make a two-hour-out-of-the-way-only-got-stuck trip that interesting!!

The PSF Linky is up. Sorry I messed with your head before! :)

  10. I did go to Anne's cottage when I was there - it was a lot tinier in person than it looks. The thatched roof was awesome - so thick! Sorry you missed it, I believe I still have postcards from there in a memory box somewhere.

I couldn't imagine driving in that mess. I just did good to cross the street without getting hit.

  13. You're really selling me on a trip to England.
I hope it gets better from here.
I work with truckers, and I'm seriously considering calling their vehicles "Lorries" from now on.

  14. Oh dear! Traffic bugaboos can sure put a damper on vacation fun. Hope the next day was better.

  15. I love that you are taking every advantage of scenic detours while on this assignment.

  16. What a bummer. It does look like a lovely cottage.
I agree with the others though, you do write so well about your detours. Making lemonade...

  17. *laugh* the ending was unexpected.... *laugh* oh well, at least you can have the front view of the cottage with you, if you want an even closer 'feel' of it, cut it out and let it lay with you on your pillow... *laugh*

  22. Hi there - a pity you got stuck in that traffic (traffic jams are a bit of a sore point with me at the moment). Know Stratford quite well now as my daughter has lived there for about 12 years. AH's cottage very pretty and Shakespeare's mum's house is a gem - well worth a visit (sorry, probably a bit late to tell you that now).

Found you via Cheshire Wife, hope you don't mind me dropping in.

  23. At the risk of allieanating [sp]a large slice of England, the midlands does not spring to mind when I think of holidays, though we have been to Stratford upon avon and found it a tourists paradise [not ours]

  30. I know what you mean about those tourist guides. The ones we have had on France suggest that you can drive about 300 miles a day whilst seeing about six tourist attractions. We ony manage to get around about two a day. Hope the rest of your holiday was better.

  31. I find roundabouts completely terrifying.

My daughter is traveling to England in the spring with her school choirs, and they are planning a stop at Stratford Upon Avon and a little visit with Anne Hathaway. She'd have been disappointed to miss it. Hope they've cleaned up the mess by then!

  32. Fun Story fro PSF. I went to England when I was 15. I didn't make it to most of the touristy sites as I was too busy watching The Breakfast Club at the theaters--8 times in a row to be exact. Now, that's a 15-year-old vacation's dream for you!

  33. Traffic -- UGH! I lived in LA for four years while attending UCLA. moved back to the Silicon Valley and commuted for two+ years. Called it quits. Moved rural. Never looked back. Tonight I had to run out to the store for a last minute item at 5:30 PM and saw several cars at the four-way stop going to the market. WHAT! TRAFFIC!!!! UGH!!! (After reading your post I recant my earlier UGH!)

  34. Traffic always makes me Cuckoo... so why is it I'm always the one at the wheel? Nice piccture of the cottage though, lol. Nice save.
