PSF: One Never Forgets a First Love

PhotoStory Friday
Hosted by Cecily and MamaGeek

You may think this week's Photo Story is about the small pleasures in life...
but it's not.You may think this is a story about brothers, how they're friends for life...
but it's not.
I could tell you this photo was taken on a hike in New Mexico just a few days after we picked up our German exchange student...
but that's not what I posted the photo for.

This is A1's chili pepper shirt. The one he lived in whenever I couldn't hide it well enough.
It's the one that continued to fade -- wash after wash -- while hanging to dry in the bleaching New Mexico sunshine.

HE LOVED THIS SHIRT.

One day, I sneaked it into the trash.
I removed the trash from the house.
He looked for it.

Stop "tsk tsk tsk-ing" me and putting me back on the Bad Mommy list (assuming I ever stepped off of it). Holy jalapenos people, I lived in the southwest-- how hard would it be to find a new chili pepper shirt?!

Famous last words.

Are you aware that there was only one of these shirts ever made in the entire history of textiles? Notice the words "Juan in a Million"? How apropos is that?
And do you remember that my son, although he's never been officially diagnosed, ticks all of the boxes on the Asperger's chart?

So, three years later, he still brings up this shirt. He strokes the memory of it as fondly as a elderly woman reminiscing about her first love. And I still continue to search. In England.
I figure my one in a million chance to find it has just gone south.

  1. Oh my daughter had this one particular dress that was two sizes too small and stained...yet she could sniff that thing out of any trash can! I had a hard time throwing it away.

    Thanks for sharing this story!!

  2. It's the same here. And then they'll go on and on about it. And I'm like "It's just a shirt!". But then Spouse steps in and says he totally gets it.

    Odd.

  3. My husband is the same way. I think it's a boy thing.

  4. Aww. That is a sad love story. Keep looking, mama! ;)

  6. My husband still goes on about a shirt I got rid of because it was really faded & grubby looking. I have bought him others but he liked that particular one years a go.
    Definitely a boy thing.
My eldest grandson is seeing a specialist next week to see if he might be borderline Aspergers. I think he ticks many of the boxes but then so does his dad!

  9. Oh I LOVE happy endings!!! (I've got to choke back the tears.) This internet thing is somthing special -- Uuummmm ... or could it be the people and nothing whatsoever to do with technology? Who cares! This is a fantastic way to wrap up the week! My son is autistic -- some things just catch his fancy. Life's just too short to sweat the small stuff. (Okay ... took me YEARS to quit perspiring over silly stuff, but I'm keepin' pretty dry these days.)

p.s. My husband came in and started looking over my shoulder.
"Hey, is she the cow lady?"
    "No she's just entertaining them."
"How long is she going to keep them? What are they doing now?"
I just looked at him blankly: "Cows? You are asking about the cows?"
    I sent him your link to F&B -- he's gone. Boys! : )

  10. It's funny how kids hand on to that one thing isn't it.

  11. Sometimes it seems like kids NEVER forget! LOL

  12. No tsk tsk tsking from me. I have so done the same thing. And been caught. And lied about how I have no idea it got in there! And then done it again. At least I didn't get caught again.

GREAT PSF, and Flea, you ROCK!

  13. How funny! My kids are known to wear the same shirts too - especially my twins - wear certain jersey shirts over and over again. Cute post.

BTW - you mentioned that my blog was loading faster - had it been really slow? I appreciate your telling me this - I haven't had anyone mention it until recently I had a few people say something. I did reduce the # of posts showing on the first page and I removed a few things from my sidebar and that seemed to help. Does the pictures on all the posts cause it to load slowly? I don't want to remove the pictures either. And, what do you mean by "twinkling"? The background? I don't even know how to make that stop. You blog loads pretty quickly. There's a slight delay at first, but not long or annoying - it's fine. Thanks for your help and letting me know.

Have a good day - Kellan

  16. I just love it!
I'm still looking for a pair of pants that my mom threw away when I was in eighth grade. Nevermind that the zipper was being held up by a safety pin...

I'm in AZ, so I'll keep my eyes peeled for a pepper shirt. :)

  19. That is so funny!

Great shot and I hope you have better luck finding the shirt. Maybe this will help!

  20. Such a great story! This is one of the things as a mom I struggle with & my boy is only 2... but I do my best to let it all go. Like when he wants to wear the same shirt 4 days in a row... major yuck. But in the end I figure, why not.

Thanks for the heads up... I for sure won't be throwing out any loved items unless the replacement has already been purchased! :)

  21. What's he going to say when he sees the new one Flea found you?

  22. Yeah for Flea giving you a happy ending! Great photo story, I'm sure I have those days ahead of me.

  23. It's funny the things that kids latch on to. When my brother was young he carried around two laminated pages of photos of Linda Evans (my parents watched a lot of Dynasty), and two small empty pill bottles - one green and one white -- that he called his "liveassey" bottles. We never figured out why.
Thanks for the comment about my little corn pictures, feel free to use the story any way you like.

  24. Yup! My boys have been and are the same way. It's been Pokemon for about three years now. @@

  25. So will they ship to you?

When I first read this post, my initial reaction was, "Dang! Those are some HUGE dandelions!"

    ReplyDelete
  26. You threw it out? Well, now, I never thought of that!

  27. Oh my. My three year old has a Lightning McQueen shirt that is way too small, ripped, and covered with stains. And yet, even though it is long-sleeved and we are in the middle of a Midwestern summer, THAT is the shirt he is always asking for.

By the way, I love your blog (even if my time is a bit crunched for commenting sometimes - sorry).

  28. So did they ship you the shirt?
