Notes from an Insane Asylum

This year's Christingle Service was so much more peaceful without Miss Ky cracking her head open on the font.

One of the boys (J2, 10 year-old) got Man of the Match for a spectacular game of footy.

We did manage to finally fit in our traditional sugar cookies... on Christmas Eve.

I bet you're wishing you were on our cookie gift list after seeing the feet on the table.

And Christmas morning started at 4 am. with J2 standing by our bed... "Mum, it's Christmas".
"Go back to bed, we told you NOT to get up before 7".

Little voice behind J2: "I was sleeping really good and J2 woke me up".

So three boys climbed into our bed.
and wiggled.
and tossed.
"...One fell out, there were four in the bed...."

At 5 J2 comes back (he's the one that fell out and had gone back to his own bed), "Mum, Santa came and I bet he brought me a Hello Kitty guitar".
"Go back to bed".

I tell my husband who has slept through most of this, "There's going to be one disappointed little boy in the morning".
(snore)

At 6 I convince the wigglers to be calm and J2 to go back to bed with the promise that we'd get up in 30 minutes.

At 6.30 ON THE NOSE, J2 is standing by my bed.

We lumber out of bed, torturing them by saying we wanted to brush our teeth first.

This year, Santa didn't wrap. But he did put jingle bells on the baby gate so we'd know if someone went downstairs.
It did us no good, because as we descended the stairs with sparkling teeth we were met with the carnage of Tasmanian Devils--already dumped Christmas stockings all over and looked- over Santa gifts.
Oh well. Another year down.

I have not visited ONE blog, left ONE comment or replied to most email. I am sorry.
I do have the excuse of packing, a sick little boy,

a hubby deploying soon and my oldest only here for about a week more.

Forgive me?

Addendum: Sick little boy nearly went to the hospital last night (and would have if a call ahead didn't confirm that they were wall to wall people and couldn't guarantee he'd be seen). He may still go today. He's had an on and off fever of 103.9. Yikes. Ain't motherhood fun?

  1. Oh no, reading this post is like a emotional roller coaster ride...

I was still giggling at the "Go back to Bed"... then saw that sick boy's face... hmmm... that's consider super high fever isn't it?

  2. I hope your kid gets better fast! It wouldn't be a great family holiday if it wasn't crazy. I can say that now that it's over!

  3. Sounds like a wonderful family Christmas...sorry your little man is not feeling well. Hope he is on the mend.

  4. Oh dear! I hope he is better now. And what would Christmas morning be without children and mayhem?

  5. we never made it to the sugar cookie decorating this year--even with all the family in town, you'd have thought that we would...
i'm so sorry that you've had sickies this holiday....both my boys went through vomitting and fevers, but nothing THAT bad...stuff like that can be a little scary for a mom. :)

  6. I have a sick little man and a destroyed house. This is the first day I logged on to the computer in about 5 days. I had 360 unread posts. I had to mark all as read. Couldn't help it. I think everyone understands. ;)

Sounds like a wonderful Christmas. Other than the little sickie of course. Hope he feels better!

  7. Nobody ever tells a woman that she will lose her ability to EVER relax once she allows her eggs to be fertilized. Worry becomes a noose around our necks...sigh. Hope your baby is better soon. And I'd eat your cookies...even with the foot odour;)

  9. I hope the little one feels better! Fevers like that are scary--I had one when I was little--turned out to be really bad pneumonia! Hope it's just a bad cold and that it's over fast! Merry Late Christmas!

  10. Wow. What a full week you've had! Love all the photos and hope all works out well with the deployment, etc. I think you have many good excuses for not hopping around the blog world.

  11. Aw..gee whiz, you have your hands way more than full! You shouldn't even be worrying about blogging at all with all that you have to do and deal with right now. Just the job of packing by itself is a humongous undertaking. Add in the hustle bustle of the holidays, a son who is ill, and your husband's deployment, and I think you ought to be nominated as Mom of the year or some other such honor just for getting through all of that. Absolutely no apologies are necessary. We as your blogger friends will still be hanging around out here in the internet when things slow back down a tad for you, so don't worry about it. Do what you need to do. Your family needs your time much more than we do right now. I hope your little boy is feeling better very soon. And enjoy the time with your visiting son as much as you can while he is there. Hugs to you. Wishing you and yours a very happy and prosperous new year. :)

  13. I'm sorry you've got a sick little one amidst the chaos there. And don't worry, I'd still eat the cookies.

  14. WOW! What a week! I hope your son is feeling better soon, and that the move into that fabulous house goes smoothly. Did I mention that we are looking for a place to move into, too? Whee, what fun!

  15. Hope your sick boy picks up soon. And happy Christmas to you and your family.

  16. I hope your son is better soon.
Sounds like a very eventful Christmas. I threatened my kids with bodily harm if they came in before seven. And, remarkably, they obeyed.

Of course, my brother-in-law called at 6:30, figuring since we have kids we'd be up.

  17. gosh, sounds fun! The only place more fun than YOUR house is MY house where there are THREE KIDS WITH PNEUMONIA and TWO PARENTS with bronchitis and one sick annoying grandma with who knows what who blames the rest of us.

    ya.

    it's a party.

Ever tried to give a two year old a nebulizer mask? (steams meds into a mask over her nose and mouth for easier breathing). Olivia? Does not enjoy it. At all.

love to you and yours... happy new year and all that fun stuff too... lets hope for a saner 2009 shall we?

  18. I just stoped by real quick to tell you that I have put the answer to my little game/riddle and to save you time here is the link: http://backandthen.wordpress.com/wp-admin/post.php?action=edit&post=592&message=6

Now that this is said, I am really sorry for your son. He must be having a really crappy Christmas and I wish him the best. I hope that the fever will go down before you consider going to the hospital again.

  19. Oh I hope your son gets better soon!

Looks like your Christmas was a blast.

We told our oldest son he could wake up everyone in the house at 8am on Christmas morning, and he was very excited he could get everyone up so early. LOL

  20. I hope that the sick little boy is on the mend. Christmas is a bad time to be ill.

  21. It's the very hungry caterpillar. He's eating your sons brains. ARHHHH! No hospital required.

Really, hope he's better soon. And as to son, hug em up so hard.

    And husband too.

Happy New Year (soon, I think.)

  22. It's great to see all your photos and I am so sorry you little one is so ill, hope he is well again very soon.
Except for your child being ill, I loved your dialogue in this post, very visual writing.
Hope you and your family have a happy, healthy 2009.
    Cheers

  23. Ai yi yi. Sorry I missed this post until now. I hope your boy is better in a hurry.

Miss Ky looks wonderfully intent, making those cookies. She's your girl alright, feet or no feet. Not to imply that she doesn't have feet. I mean, of course she has feet. What on earth was I thinking?

I figured you were up to your ears in Christmas and packing. Glad your oldest is there to help and enjoy it all with you. Get some rest at some point!

  24. I hope your little guy is feeling better! We've unfortunately had our share of hospital visits in the last little while and so not fun.

I haven't been by in a while, so if I don't get a chance, I wish you luck with your packing and the move...
and all the best to you and your lovely family for 2009. May it bring you health and happiness and lots and lots of love and good things.

  25. The pictures pretty much said it all... aside from the "Go back to bed!" part, lol.

I haven't been able to post much either since our daughter came home with a broken ankle bone, got a blood clot in her leg, and had to spend a night in the hospital the night before Christmas Eve.

I can hardly wait for it to all be over this year! Have a very Happy & Prosperous New Year!

  26. I love reading your blog! It takes me right back to the days when my four were little ones. The sugar cookies, the sickness, the EARLY morning wake-up call on Christmas morning ... oh, how I miss it.

Take care of yourself so you don't get sick. Happy New Year!

  27. Funny, cute and stressed post! Thank goodness they will be quiet for short periods when in the parents' bed. We managed from 4:30-7 with that tactic. (Though I used to wait until 5:30 to get my family up--even when I was in college. I hope no one ever tells my children that!)
